County Results Presentation Evening

Haughton swept the board at the Best Kept Village Presentation Evening held at Sanders Hall, Rodbaston on Monday 1st August.  Not only did the village win Best Large Village in Stafford District, it also won the Rubery Owen Holdings Ltd Trophy for Best Village in Stafford District, large or small.  To crown this year’s campaign Haughton took the top award – Best Large Village in County.  BKV Co-ordinator Peter Lawrence collected two certificates, the Community Council of Staffordshire shield and a mountain ash tree donated by Staffordshire Wildlife Fund.  In addition, the village will be able to display a special sign and will receive prize money of £200.  In his introduction Mr J Perry, MBE, Chairman of the Best Kept Village Working Group made special mention of Haughton’s efforts in the children’s poster competition, the neatness of the Shropshire Inn and the quality of the verges.  At the end of the evening came an unexpected special award presented by the Vice-Chairman of Staffordshire County Council, Bob Fraser.  He had been so impressed by the display of children’s posters when he drove through the village that a special certificate has been awarded to Haughton St Giles School.  The Certificate of Corporate Recognition has been awarded to the school ‘in recognition of your exceptional contribution to the appearance of Staffordshire County’.  This delightful award rounded off an evening of spectacular success.  Thanks go to everyone in the village for taking part;  all the organisations of all ages and interests from Brownies to Garden Guild;  the school;  the businesses;  those who maintain the flower beds and borders and tend the verges;  those who pick up litter;  dog-owners who clear up after their pets;  householders who maintain their gardens, pavements and road edges;  those who take their litter home.  And a special congratulation and thanks must be made to our BKV Co-ordinator, Peter Lawrence, whose leadership, example, rallying calls, hard work, dedication and enthusiasm is phenomenal.  Thank you, Peter, and well done.  The residents of Haughton Parish are proud to live in the Best Kept Large Village in Staffordshire.

Children’s Poster Competition

At the end of the Best Kept Village in Staffordshire Presentation of Awards evening on Monday 1st August came a special award presented by the Vice-Chairman of Staffordshire County Council, Bob Fraser.  He had been so impressed by the display of children’s posters when he drove through the village that a special certificate was awarded to Haughton St Giles School.  The Certificate of Corporate Recognition was awarded to the school ‘in recognition of your exceptional contribution to the appearance of Staffordshire County’.  This wonderful proof of the children’s support for the Best Kept Village competition was displayed on the fence opposite St Giles’ Church.

Group Litter Picking

The Group Litter Picks were held on seven occasions between Sunday 20th March and Friday 8th July.  Volunteers armed with litter pickers and collecting bags roamed the roads looking for stray pieces of litter in our generally tidy village.  Dust and leaves were swept up to ensure that our streets and public areas look spick and span.  It was also an opportunity to meet new people, as well as providing exercise and a breath of fresh air.  Volunteers bitten by the anti-litter bug were often seen out and about gathering litter at other times because the Best Kept Village is a year-round campaign and not just a summer event.
